Al-Rajaa Community Center for Empowerment
At the heart of our name is Al-Rajaa, an Arabic word meaning “hope.” Just as hope serves as a light in times of uncertainty, we are here to offer support, guidance, and empowerment to immigrant, refugee, and vulnerable communities. Our mission is to create a palace of growth, connection, and opportunity—a hub where individuals and families can find the resources they need to thrive. At Al-Rajaa, we believe in building a stronger, more inclusive community rooted in hope for a brighter future.

About Us
Launched in the fall of 2021, the NMSU Afghan Refugee Response project was first started by Hiba Muhyi and her mother Rajaa Shindi as an effort to assist and aid Afghan refugees resettling here in Southern New Mexico. Having a cultural and religious connection with the refugees drove Hiba’s efforts and need to help them.
